About Sophie

Australian/British Soprano, Sophie Hamer, is currently based in Perth, Western Australia and studies under the tutelage of acclaimed Australian Mezzo-Soprano, Nicole Youl. Sophie grew up with classical music, having received musicianship, violin, and flute lessons from a young age, as well as participated in choirs. Sophie has been a member of several internationally renowned choral groups, including Voyces (2019, 2020) Gondwana Voices (2018) and Latitude 34 as part of the Gondwana National Choral School (2019). Sophie had the opportunity to perform alongside the Gesualdo Six, the Giovanni Consort and Voyces for a performance of ‘Spem in alium’ by Thomas Tallis as part of the 2020 Perth Festival. Sophie also regularly sings as a cantor at St. Patrick’s Basilica, Fremantle.

Sophie completed her tertiary education at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA), and received her Bachelor of Music in Classical Vocal Performance, graduating in 2022. Sophie studied under the tutelage of acclaimed Australian Soprano, Emma Matthews AM whilst at the academy. Highlights of Sophie’s performance repertoire at WAAPA include; Mabel ‘The Pirates of Penzance’ by Gilbert and Sullivan, The Dew Fairy ‘Hänsel und Gretel’ by Engelbert Humperdinck, Soprano Soloist ‘Jauchzet Gott in allen Landen BWV 51’ by J.S. Bach (Trumpet Soloist: Brent Grapes, Concertmaster: Paul Wright), Soprano Soloist ‘Coronation Mass in C’ by W.A. Mozart, Soprano Chorus and Can-Can Dancer ‘Opheus in the Underworld’ by Jacques Offenbach, and performing for Maestro Richard Bonynge AC, CBE in a gala concert hosted in his honour. Masterclasses include Sara Macliver and Australian Baroque, Lisa Harper-Brown, Nicole Youl and Michael Lewis OAM. Sophie also was a finalist for the Royal Overseas League (ROSL) Bach Prize (2020, 2021), Art Song Prize (2022), Baroque Prize (2022) and Opera Lover’s WA Aria Prize (2021, 2022).

In 2023, Sophie was a recipient of the inaugural Margaret Pride Scholarship with the Perth Symphonic Chorus, and was featured as the Soprano Soloist for the Australian Premier of ‘Invictus: A Passion’ by Howard Goodall, as well as understudy to the Soprano Soloist for Messiah, Handel (2022, 2023). Sophie also performed in a new production, Enchanted Encounters- Songs of the Supernatural at the rediscovered Liberty Theatre. Sophie also performed in the Fringe World 2024 revival of the production, in partnership with Technical Alliance and supported by West Australian Opera. Sophie will be joining the HIP Company as Ino in ‘Semele’ by John Eccles in April of 2024.

Outside of performing, Sophie works as the Artistic Planning Coordinator for Perth Symphony Orchestra, where she supports Creative Director, Fiona Campbell OAM, in planning the orchestra’s vibrant concert program.
