‘Messiah’, Handel
Perth Symphonic Chorus continues a 280-year-old tradition of performing G. F. Handel’s timeless oratorio, Messiah. A Christmas ritual in Perth, Messiah always delights audiences with spectacular singing and orchestral playing.
Soloists Sara Macliver, Margaret Trubiano, Benjamin Rasheed and Robert Hofmann join with Perth Symphonic Chorus to present well-loved pieces like Rejoice Greatly, the Trumpet Shall Sound, the Amen Chorus and the timeless Hallelujah Chorus.
The Perth Baroque Orchestra is led by distinguished baroque specialist Paul Wright in a performance conducted by James Pratt.
Handel needed just 24 days to write Messiah in the summer of 1741. His musical setting of the life of Jesus Christ is part narrative, part meditation. Another famous work by Handel, Zadok the Priest, was performed for the 9th time at a coronation ceremony this year. The enduring popularity of these works has immortalised Handel as one of the greatest ever composers.
